Young Arts Project |

The Arts Society Englemere joined with South Western trains in a Young Arts project with our local schools. Eight schools were contacted with a view to them showcasing their art at Sunningdale station. We asked for about eight pieces of art work completed in their usual art classes so it was part of each schools’ curriculum. This Young Arts project was launched on 23rd July 2019 at Sunningdale Station in the up-line waiting room. The artwork is from four local schools; Holy Trinity Church of England School, St.Michael's School, Charters School and St George’s School. This is a continuing project so the art will be changed every three to four months using different schools. | The Arts Society Englemere 2017 Young Arts Award |

In 2016/17 we have supported work in the Art Department at Charters School in Sunningdale. We were delighted that several of the students along with their teacher, Nancy Lee-Wragg, were able to join us for our September lecture and bring along some examples of their work to display. Nancy told us that the funding was used to support the following workshops run by working artists: Cas Holmes worked with Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 students at Charters. Jennie Jewitt-Harris worked with Year 12 and 13 students at Chartes, and, Mark Spray worked with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students in Cornwall as part of their St Ives trip. | ENGLEMERE DFAS Young Arts Award |

The Performing Arts have been the focus of the Young Arts Award this year and we were delighted to provide a grant towards a new guitar for Hani Elias. In return Hani performed a selection of both classical and modern pieces at a recital for new members held at St Peters Church, Cranbourne; a beautiful setting for a members evening, and an opportunity to get to know about The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies. Hani, aged 16, who has just completed Year 11 and his GCSE's at Charters School, has been awarded a place to study at The Junior Royal College of Music in London. Hani is a member of the Berkshire Maestros’ Academy which assists talented young musicians and next month Hani will be part of a group that will be visiting and performing in three major cities in China. The evening was hosted by Richard Audsley, Chair of the Ascot Society with guests Caroline Coleman, Vice Chairman of NADFAS West Surrey Area and Alan Carr, Charters Ambassador. | Young Carers 2014 Boat Project |

| The Society has provided funding for an arts based project to be carried out by a group of young carers. These are young people who take responsibility for someone in their family with an illness or disability. As a result of their experiences some children loose their sense of personal identity, accepting their role as the norm within their family.
When we met their social worker she explained the processes involved in supporting these children.
'I was trying to come up with a visual metaphor for being a Young Carer and ultimately came up with the idea of a BOAT. The journey can sometimes be rough, sometimes plain-sailing, sometimes suddenly stormy – frightening and overwhelming; the crew can feel very close and often work brilliantly as a team but they can sometimes feel very isolated from the rest of the population; manning a boat can be hard work and if things go wrong, it may feel like the boat is sinking. Yet you see and experience things from the perspective of this boat that you would never see on the land.
As a result of this thinking… I decided to work with the group to construct a full-size, workable kayak out of cardboard! (Don’t worry – this has been done before and is possible!).. The reason I decided on this is because people would not instantly expect a cardboard boat to float and hold a person.
This is the same for families in which there is serious disability with a young person doing a lot of the caring – people do not expect the family to cope and manage… YET, these families defy expectations and, with the right support, are amazingly strong'.
The Young Carers group have completed their boat and have worked on the decoration looking at both the history of decoration for both narrow boats and river boats. Their aim is to put the boat on show in an exhibition, along with photos and video footage of the construction and testing stages, as well as creating scenery around the boat (sea-scape), and artistic expressions on being a Young Carer (from all members of all ages).
As a treat the group hope to go to Henley Rowing museum sometime during the summer holiday.

| ENGLEMERE DFAS ART AWARD 2012 |

| In 2012, Englemere inaugurated its first Art Award aimed at 6th formers and those in the first year at Art School.
The winner of the first Award was Harry Gilmour of Windsor Boy’s School who was presented with his cheque for £500 at the June Meeting. Harry, already a skilled photographer submitted a range of images which impressed the judges by their quality (most were in black and white) and the maturity of his approach to his subjects. Harry, who hopes to go to university in October to study photography said: ‘For me the award will act as a huge stepping stone in helping me to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming professional in what I love. In economic times as such as these, money is tight for everyone yet photographic equipment stays at extremely high prices. This award will help me to purchase more equipment allowing me to diversify my work and widen my skills and abilities. I am extremely grateful to be the recipient of this award.’

The first runner-up was Claire Johnson, a 6th former from Charters School in Ascot who submitted a range of drawings and paintings. Claire, who received a cheque for £250 said ‘I am really pleased to have received this award – it was a real confidence boost going into my AS art exam’.
Having previously focussed the Young Arts programme on widening access to art for young children in primary schools in the Ascot area, we decided to initiate an award which could provide substantial support to someone wishing to pursue art beyond the 6th form by funding study, travel or materials. The brief was deliberately wide, entrants were asked to submit up to 10 images of their work in the decorative and fine arts including visual arts and crafts.
The judging panel was greatly encouraged by the high standard and the quality of the students work. Both the winner and runner up mounted a display of their work for members to see before the prizes were awarded. We hope to retain contact with the successful students as they pursue their careers and wish them well in their studies. |

| EDFAS 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION 2011 |

| To mark the 10th Anniversary of EDFAS in April 2011, we supported 5 young arts projects with artist Kerry Lemon. For this celebration project, we worked with 6 locally based groups each producing two stained glass effect pieces of art of celebratory cakes. The groups were:
4 after School Clubs based at South Ascot Primary School, these included children aged 5 to 9 in each of the first 3 years at primary school;
young people at the Ascot Kotch Youth Club which meets at the Racecourse on Friday evenings, they range in age from 14-17 years; and a group of Young Carers from the Princess Royal Trust Carers Service sponsored by the Royal Borough. For many of the young people, this was a unique opportunity to work as part of a team to create something which was publicly displayed. The young people seemed to be thoroughly engrossed in the creation of their cakes and derived great pleasure from the results of their efforts.The cakes were created using tissue paper on plastic sheeting and look beautiful hung in front of a window to allow the light to shine through. They are inspired by Andy Warhol's beautiful cake illustrations (see glorious example below), and the six banners were hung in rainbow order: red, yellow, pink, green, orange and blue.

| Summer 2010, Entry for NADFAS/Royal Society of British Artists Exhibition |

NADFAS and the Royal Society of British Artists will, for the second year, host an exhibition at the Mall Galleries in March 2011. The Competition is open to 6th Form students and local areas are invited to select an art work from a local school for consideration by the judging panel. This year EDFAS has selected an item which has been submitted to the judging panel. The painting in oil and acrylic, 75cm x 50cm, was created by Steven Bye, a Year 12 student at Charter’s School. Judging will take place late 2010 and we hope Steven’s entry will be successful |

| ‘SaturDADS’ is a project organised within the Borough to enable fathers and male carers to spend time with young children in various activities around play. Kerry Lemon arranged a painting day providing toy cars, other household and play objects, and paint which the children could use to create some colourful wall hangings. On a hot, sunny day, dads and their children, some not yet at the walking stage, enjoyed the opportunity to combine colours and play freely to create images. Kerry had provided plenty of water for washing and protective ‘overalls’ to ensure children returned home without too much damage.

| Children from year 6 at Great Hollands School worked with ceramic artist Sadie James to create a work of art to celebrate UNICEF’s Children’s Rights. The roundel, which has been installed at the entrance to the school in Bracknell, Berkshire, was made in the form of a jig saw. The children cut the pieces and decorated them with the words ‘hello’ and ‘peace’ in the many languages represented by their ethnic backgrounds. The children were inspired by the creation of this wonderful piece of art and justly proud to see it permanently installed at the School |

| Englemere DFAS joined the Bracknell Pyramid Scheme, run by East Berkshire Mind, sponsoring workshops in five local schools for a total of 50 children with artist Kerry Lemon, a local illustrator with a Queen Elizabeth scholarship. The children created sun flowers as shown in the photos below. The Pyramid Clubs offer a safe space for children to play, learn new skills, take part in activities and develop positive relationships. They are run by Club leaders and volunteers who are trained to develop children’s confidence and enthusiasm. |

| Artist Sadie James led a 2 day workshop at which children worked on ceramic projects using different clay building techniques of texture and glazing. The finished work included Indian henna tattoo hands, mini-beast tiles, Aztec bowls and natural forms pots. |
